S.T.O.P. Welcomes NY Domestic Terrorism Task Force
[NEW YORK, NY, 8/15/2019] -- Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy group,
today welcomed the creation of a domestic terrorism task force to respond to the recent series of high-profile mass shootings. The task force would develop proposals to prevent and protect against mass shootings, particularly those perpetrated by white supremacist and white power groups.

“We believe it’s crucial that New York use evidence-based models to respond to apparent increases in mass shootings. Using restorative justice and other emerging criminal justice models, we can respond to the heartbreaking attacks that shocked our country, keeping our communities safer. We are hopeful that this task force can correct our state’s history of over-policing communities of color, while overlooking the threat that white supremacist terrorists pose.

The Surveillance Technology Oversight Project is a non-profit advocacy organization and legal services provider hosted by the Urban Justice Center. S.T.O.P. litigates and advocates for privacy, fighting excessive local and state-level surveillance. Our work highlights the discriminatory impact of surveillance on Muslim Americans, immigrants, and communities of color.
