Friend,

Did you know that New York is expanding a system tracking nearly every card in New York City?

The controversial technology is automated license plate readers (ALPRs), high speed cameras mounted to street lights and patrol cars, tracking every car passing by. While New York has steadily increased its use of ALPRs for years, this week saw a milestone.

In a bombshell interview, Governor Cuomo admitted that the reason he’s calling for a multimillion dollar overhaul of New York’s license plates is so he can further expand this Orwellian technology.
S.T.O.P. was quick to denounce to moved.
S.T.O.P.'s Albert Fox Cahn interview on National Public Radio's WNYC

We think it is wrong to expand this alarming technology when we have no clear limits on how data from ALPRS can be shared with law enforcement, or even ICE. We’ve also added an article to our new research blog, one in a growing list of articles explaining how law enforcement agencies develop and deploy the most sophisticated spy tools in their arsenal.

With thanks,
Albert Fox Cahn, Esq.
