S.T.O.P. Commends Clarke, Pressley, Tlaib’s Reintroduction Of Facial Recognition Ban

(New York, NY, 7/7/2021) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy group, commends Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09), Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), and Rashida Tlaib’s (MI-13) reintroduction of the No Biometric Barriers to Housing Act of 2021, banning public and assisted housing facilities’ use of facial recognition. The would also require the Department of Housing and Urban Development to report on the use and bias of facial recognition in public and assisted housing.

“No one should be subject to this surveillance in their own home,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. “At a time when many public housing buildings are underfunded, we should spend our money on repairs, not tracking. Facial recognition is biased, broken, and a threat to BIPOC communities. But banning facial recognition in public housing is just a first step to a complete nationwide ban.”
