There are a lot of exciting parts to our work here at S.T.O.P., but the most gratifying part is seeing our team continue to grow. We wanted to take a moment to introduce you to the newest members of S.T.O.P.!
 
Our Newest Staff
Evan Selinger - Scholar-in-Residence

Evan Selinger is a Professor of Philosophy at Rochester Institute of Technology and an Affiliate Scholar at Northeastern University’s Center for Law, Innovation, and Creativity.

A prolific scholar, Evan’s research covers a range of ethical and legal issues concerning technological governance, particularly privacy. The Guardian selected Evan’s co-authored book, Re-Engineering Humanity, one of The Observer’s “Best Books of 2018” and one of “Thirty Books to Help Us Understand the World in 2020.” Zadie Smith told The Wall Street Journal that it was one of her favorite reads of 2019.

Johna Medeiros - Staff Accountant 
Johna has a Bachelors in Finance from Bryant Univerity, and 12 plus years of accounting experience.

Brendan Gilligan
Legal Intern

Brendan Gilligan is a legal intern at S.T.O.P and a third-year student at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. He has previously interned with The Center for Investigative Reporting, where he helped enforce journalists’ open records requests and worked on other media law issues, and the Federal Public Defender for the District of Connecticut. Brendan is also a staff editor on Northwestern’s Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property and was in the MacArthur Justice Center’s Civil Rights Litigation Clinic. Brendan received a B.A. in political science from UC Irvine in 2020.
Kathryn Prince
Legal Intern

Kate Prince is a 3L at Georgetown University Law Center and the President of the Georgetown Cyberlaw Society. She has a strong interest in the novel legal issues raised by technological advances with a specific focus on privacy issues. After law school she plans to return to her hometown of New York City where she hopes to continue working on anything and everything related to technology law. In her free time, she plays Dungeons & Dragons.
Leah Haynes
Legal Intern

Leah Haynes is a 2L at Georgetown University Law Center. Prior to law school, she attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she majored in violin performance and applied mathematics. Leah formerly worked at a small tech startup focused on improving the trustworthiness and integrity of scientific publication processes and currently is a legal intern at FordHarrison. In her personal life, Leah enjoys traveling, dogs, and live music.
Nathan Darmon
Research Intern

Nathan is a Dual Degree student between Columbia University and Sciences Po Paris, where he is first double-majoring in law and government and then earning a joint degree in philosophy and economics. He is passionate about constitutional and civil liberties litigation, especially as they relate to the defense of free expression and the right to privacy in the digital age. He has previous experience working on key 4th Amendment issues at the New Civil Liberties Alliance, where he drafted memos for a number of tech-privacy issues and warrantless surveillance cases post-Carpenter. On campus, he continues this advocacy as an editor of the Columbia Undergraduate Law Review and as the co-founder of the Sciences Po Debate Union, travelling throughout Europe to speak out on pressing civil liberties issue. 
Robert Pattillo
Legal Intern

Robert Pattillo is a legal intern for the fall semester who is currently at 3L at Georgetown University Law Center and is interested in studying international and human rights issues.
Sabah Lokhandwala
Advocacy Intern
 

Sabah is a junior and Tisch Scholar at Tufts University and is excited to be working with the S.T.O.P. team for the whole year! She studies Political Science and Science, Technology, and Society (STS) and is passionate about the intersection of civil liberties, technology, and Muslim American Advocacy. She has previously worked at the Council for American Islamic Relations, the Conservation Law Foundation, and the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office where she explored civil rights advocacy, action-based research, and issues impacting her communities. At Tufts she is the Editor-in-Chief of the Tufts Observer, Tufts oldest publication, active member of the South Asian Political Action Committee, and Analyst at the Lantern, a student run STS think tank. Sabah is excited to learn more about technology, histories of surveillance, and privacy at her time at S.T.O.P. In her free time Sabah loves to explore coffee shops in Boston, practice henna, and bake elaborate cakes to procrastinate with her friends. 

Shivam Saran
Research Intern

Shivam Saran is a research intern at S.T.O.P. from Las Vegas, Nevada. He is a senior at Emory University, where he is pursuing a major in Quantitative Sciences and a minor in Physics. Shivam is deeply interested in the intersection between data science and law. Through his work with the American Bar Association, Harvard Kennedy School, Center for American Progress, and Roosevelt Network, he has developed both his passion and responsibility to help build equity for marginalized communities.
Sohini Uphayay
Research Intern

Sohini Upadhyay is a Computer Science Ph.D. candidate at Harvard University where she is fortunate to be advised by Prof. Krzysztof Gajos. Through her doctoral research, Sohini is broadly interested in understanding how automated decision-making creates, perpetuates, and amplifies harm. Her current projects span HCI, technology policy, and AI interpretability. Prior to joining S.T.O.P., Sohini spent the summer of 2022 interning with the Technology for Liberty Project at the ACLU of Massachusetts. Prior to her Ph.D., Sohini worked as a Research Engineer at IBM Research AI and received Bachelor of Arts degrees in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Chicago.
Stephanie Chan
Advocacy Intern

Stephanie is a junior at Barnard College studying History and Human Rights. She is passionate about the intersection and historical dimension of state surveillance, racial justice, and international law. Previously, Stephanie worked as a legal research analyst at Law and Forensics; researching emerging national and international cyber security issues and policies.

On campus, she serves as the Vice President for Columbia Youth for Debate and coordinates D.E.I. efforts for the Columbia Undergraduate Law Review and Columbia Journal of History. Stephanie is keen on learning more about the social implications of big data and tackling discriminatory mass surveillance in New York City and beyond.

Sylvia Deng
Communications Intern

Sylvia is a senior at Mount Holyoke College pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a Nexus in Journalism, Media and Public Discourse. She is interested in ethics and digital surveillance, living with a British Longhair named Jojo!
It's remarkable just how much S.T.O.P. has expanded these past three years, and we won’t stop growing any time soon. With your support, S.T.O.P. will continue to grow into the organization we need to dismantle mass surveillance.
