S.T.O.P. Condemns DHS LGBTQ+ Surveillance
(New York, NY, 3/03/2025) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy and civil rights group, condemns the Department of Homeland Security for lifting its ban on surveillance of the LGBTQ+ community. Coming in the wake of President Trump’s anti-DEI executive orders, the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis removed privacy protections banning surveillance based solely gender identity or sexual orientation. The civil rights group condemned the removal as yet another alarming attack on LGBTQ+ rights by the Trump administration.

“This is just the latest chapter in America’s anti- LGBTQ+ surveillance,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Communications Director Will Owen. “Trump is wrong to put culture wars ahead of national security. DHS is enabling far-right lawmakers to escalate policies like ‘Don’t Say Gay’ and the criminalization of gender-affirming care. Progressive states must live up to their commitment to LGBTQ+ residents, hardening their laws against surveillance to protect queer and trans communities.”

Last year, S.T.O.P. released Age Of Surveillance: Conservative Age Surveillance Of LGBTQ+ Youth, a report detailing the harms of internet age-verification laws on LGBTQ+ children and teens, including New York’s SAFE for Kids Act. In 2023, S.T.O.P. released Roadblock to Care: Barriers to Out of State Travel for Abortion and Gender Affirming Care, detailing surveillance of patients seeking out-of-state abortions and gender-affirming care.
