MEDIA ADVISORY

Council Member Shahana Hanif Will Rally to Ban Biometric Recognition Technology Alongside Advocates

Two bills—to ban biometric technology use by landlords and businesses—are being heard in the Council Technology Committee.

New York, NY | On Monday, March 2nd at 9 AM Council Member Shahana Hanif, Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P), The Legal Aid Society, Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law at NYU Law, New York Civil Liberties Union, DSA Technology Action Organizing Committee, will hold a rally urging the passage of two bills to ban the use of facial recognition and other biometric surveillance by landlords and businesses of public accommodation.

Int. 213, sponsored by Council Member Shahana Hanif, banning biometric recognition technology and protecting any biometric identifier information collected by businesses of public accommodation, and Int. 428, sponsored by Council Member Pierina Sanchez, banning the same by landlords, are being heard in the Council Committee on Technology on Monday March 2nd at 10 AM. Hearing agenda here.

The legislation follows documented reporting on private businesses using biometric recognition to track customers without consent, and landlords installing biometric recognition entry systems in residential buildings. National and local outlets have reported on the risks of misidentification, racial bias, and privacy violations tied to this technology; as well as the extreme civil liberties risks of private entities selling this data to ICE or other government agencies.
