Friend,
Right now, ICE is building one of the most expansive surveillance systems ever deployed against communities in the United States — and recent federal legislation just handed the agency a multibillion-dollar funding stream to make it even bigger.
On March 19 at 2:00 PM ET, S.T.O.P. is launching a new Power Down Surveillance event series designed to break down the systems of surveillance that increasingly shape our lives — and share what we can do to push back.
In this inaugural session, S.T.O.P. will provide an accessible overview of ICE’s rapidly expanding surveillance capabilities, from real-time facial recognition and iris scanning to 24/7 social media monitoring. ICE has deployed these invasive and undemocratic spyware against immigrant communities and activists. Now, with new funding and new political backing, the agency is using them to drive deportations and crack down on immigrants, protestors, observers, and anyone who stands in its way.
Facilitated by S.T.O.P. Executive Director Michelle Dahl, this session is designed as an introduction for individuals, activists, and civil society groups who want to understand ICE’s surveillance tactics — and what lawmakers must do to protect privacy and civil rights.
