Friend,
At this very moment, there is an NYPD officer somewhere in New York City pulling up a dashboard on their phone that links to a network of surveillance technology and years of police records.
That system is called the Domain Awareness System, or DAS, and we are just starting to uncover how vast — and dangerous — it really is.
The DAS doesn’t just watch. It links feeds from citywide camera networks, license plate readers, helicopter footage, 911 records, and countless databases into a single, searchable app. Every NYPD officer has access to it, with almost no limits on how they use it.
Our research shows this isn't just a privacy problem — it's a civil rights crisis. DAS surveillance disproportionately drives stops and arrests of BIPOC and Muslim New Yorkers, feeding a cycle of discriminatory overpolicing.
The NYPD has expanded DAS rapidly, and largely in secret, ignoring court-mandated reforms along the way. We think that must stop.
That’s why this summer S.T.O.P. is powering down surveillance and fighting to #DeletetheDAS — raising funds that will help us dismantle this surveillance system and replace it with real accountability.
Supporting S.T.O.P. is a way to join the fight for community freedom. Please consider donating at bit.ly/powerdownsurveillance.
