Friend,

As surveillance technology becomes more embedded into everyday life, it’s never been more important to understand how these tools erode civil liberties––and how we can advocate for the rights of our communities. S.T.O.P. is thrilled to share upcoming events that enable everyone to learn about and fight back against ubiquitous systems of surveillance.

On Thursday, April 30 at 6pm EST, S.T.O.P. continues our Power Down Surveillance campaign with a webinar on The Algorithmic School-to-Prison Pipeline

From Gaggle tracking students’ online activity to SmartPass keeping tabs on bathroom breaks in NYC schools, today’s students are increasingly subject to invasive surveillance technology, and spaces of education are turned into opportunities for monitoring, data collection, and criminalization.

We’re bringing together policy and legal experts to examine how algorithmic school surveillance is reshaping students' First Amendment and Fourth Amendment rights, who bears the costs, and what accountability could actually look like.

Nicholas Stewart, Executive Director of the Justice Education Project, will moderate the webinar, joined by S.T.O.P.’s Corinne Worthington alongside Kristin Woelfel of the Center for Democracy & Technology and Sophia Cope of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

And on Saturday, April 25, S.T.O.P. is taking part in Brooklyn Org Volunteer Day, a day of service connecting volunteers with local nonprofits across Brooklyn!

We’re thrilled to host a collaborative session where you can become a volunteer public advocate with S.T.O.P., joining our effort to Ban the Scan, a campaign to ban facial recognition in New York City and State.

You’ll learn about S.T.O.P.’s work on this campaign and write your own advocacy script, practicing your pitch as a trained advocate. We’ll phonebank together, calling the office of NY City Council Speaker Julie Menin as well as state legislators, fighting for the rights of all New Yorkers and a full ban on invasive surveillance technology.
