Social Distance FOIL Campaign

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Friend,

In the age of COVID-19, we all know that social distance is a matter of life and death. But like any other power, social distance surveillance can be abused.

Sadly, it’s impossible to hold police accountable for these new spy tools unless we know what surveillance technologies they use to watch our communities. That’s why S.T.O.P. is partnering with a network of law students for a nationwide public records campaign, demanding to know how our movements are being watched.

We already know the NYPD uses everything from cellphone location data, to CCTV, and even drones to monitor social distancing. But there are likely many programs that have never seen the light of day, until now.

Whether you support expanded surveillance or think the monitoring has gone too far, we can all agree that the public deserves to know how our tax dollars are used to monitor our communities. In the coming weeks and months, we’ll keep you updated as our project learns more about how we are all being watched during this crisis.

With thanks,
Team S.T.O.P.
