S.T.O.P. Condemns FBI Facial Recognition With Clearview AI

(New York, NY, 1/11/2021) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a privacy and civil rights group, condemns the FBI’s new $18,000 contract with Clearview AI. The contract expands the FBI’s relationship with the controversial facial recognition vendor, which has drawn widespread scrutiny for taking the publics’ images from social media and other websites without consent. S.T.O.P. renewed its prior calls on the Biden Administration for a federal ban on facial recognition.

“If anyone else stole our photos, the FBI would be trying to arrest them, but Clearview AI is getting paid for the theft,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. “It’s long past time for the Biden Administration to take action and ban federal use of this surveillance tech. This sort of surveillance isn’t just a threat to civil rights, it undermines democracy.”

Last week, the civil rights group revealed that facial recognition had only been used in 3 cases connected with the January 6th Insurrection, with the majority of attackers identified with public tips and other low-tech leads. Last August, S.T.O.P. condemned federal expansion of facial recognition after a Government Accountability Office reported 18 of 24 federal agencies surveyed use facial recognition.
