S.T.O.P. Condemns Adams’ Proposed Gun Detection Software
New York City Mayor Eric Adams made the proposal today as part of his Blueprint to End Gun Violence.

(New York, NY, 1/24/2022) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based civil rights group, condemned Eric Adams’ proposed use of gun detection software as part of his Blueprint to End Gun Violence. The highly-experimental gun detection technology has come under criticism for errors and lack of effectiveness.

“Gun detection software is pseudoscience, not safety,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. “Tech firms are selling New Yorkers a pipe dream when they claim that their software is the answer. I’m terrified we’ll soon see police inundated with false reports of guns from this untested technology.  New Yorkers want safety, but this software is nothing more than a Silicon Valley sales pitch.”

The civil rights group previously opposed gun detection technology, which claims to use computer vision software to automatically detect guns. While the technology is largely untested, initial data suggests that the software could easily mistake everyday items for a gun.

The Surveillance Technology Oversight Project is a non-profit advocacy organization and legal services provider. S.T.O.P. litigates and advocates for privacy, fighting excessive local and state-level surveillance. Our work highlights the discriminatory impact of surveillance on Muslim Americans, immigrants, and communities of color.
