President Biden: We Need Safety, Not Surveillance

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Friend,

Yesterday, as President Biden met with Mayor Eric Adams and boosted the NYPD narrative, STOP and our allies were demanding evidence-based safety measures, not surveillance pseudoscience. The COVID-19 driven increase in shootings across the country is harrowing, but the  Mayor’s plan to expand surveillance gimmicks is not the answer.

We were joined by fellow advocates from Amnesty International, Innocence Project, Legal Aid Society, National Lawyers Guild, the NYU Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law, and The Policing and Social Justice Project at our online press conference, making clear that Adams’ Blueprint doesn’t represent New Yorkers. We called on Biden to stop New York City from becoming a model of surveillance and mass incarceration for the nation.

New Yorkers need safety, not police spyware. We need to invest in tried-and-true violence prevention and social safety net programs, not technology that facilitates police violence against Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color. We also must invest in public health measures to end the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic destruction wrought on communities, the real root cause of the escalating crime we see today.
In solidarity,
