S.T.O.P. Condemns Clearview AI’s 1 Mil Facial Recognition Searches
The civil rights group denounced the surveillance company’s announcement that its software has been used by U.S. law enforcement to run nearly 1 million searches.

(NEW YORK, NY, 3/28/2023) - Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy and civil rights group, condemns Clearview AI’s announcement that its software has been used by U.S. law enforcement to run nearly 1 million facial recognition searches. During a BBC interview, Clearview AI CEO Hoan Ton-That also shared that the controversial facial recognition vendor has scraped 3 billion images from social media platforms like Facebook without user consent. The civil rights group renewed its calls for facial recognition bans in cities and states across the country.

“It’s appalling that a company could steal billions of our photos, but it’s even worse that the police are paying them for that data,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. The police should be investigating Clearview AI for theft, not awarding it contracts. This sort of surveillance capitalism chills democracy and puts us all at risk. And all too often, elected officials don’t even know that this is happening. That’s why cities and states must take the threat of facial recognition seriously and move forward with bans on the technology. There’s simply no justification for using public tax dollars to buy stolen private photos.”

In May 2022, S.T.O.P. welcomed Clearview AI’s settlement with the American Civil Liberties Union, agreeing to cease sales to government agencies in Illinois and private entities anywhere in the United States. But the New York civil rights organization renewed calls for a national ban on government use of facial recognition vendors like Clearview AI. A month prior, S.T.O.P. also condemned Clearview AI’s plan to expand its facial recognition technology beyond law enforcement to banks and other private businesses.
