Coffee With A Side Of Surveillance

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

Friend,

We all know the cost of coffee can feel out of control, but we draw the line at paying for your latte with your biometric privacy. That’s why last week we filed yet another class action lawsuit, this time alleging that Starbucks violates New York City law by failing to warn customers that their biometric data is collected in stores using Amazon Go’s “Just Walk Out” technology.

The law is pretty simple: If stores want New Yorkers’ biometric data, you have to warn us, telling us what information you track. Even though the requirements on companies are quite minimal, Starbucks is far from the only offender.

We continue to see businesses all across the city flagrantly violate biometric notice rules, tracking our bodies without posting the warnings New York City requires. Giving New Yorkers notice is crucial, but it’s not enough. That’s why we’re not just taking companies like Starbucks to court, but we continue to fight in the City Council for an outright ban on this sort of surveillance. When we sip our morning coffee, we shouldn’t have to wonder if it’s served with a side of surveillance.

In solidarity,
Albert Fox Cahn
