Friend,
On Monday, S.T.O.P. joined advocates and elected officials for another powerful New York City Hall rally and press conference against facial recognition, which took place just before a City Council hearing with the Committee on Technology. The Committee discussed two bills, both part of the “Ban The Scan” legislative campaign, which would ban the use of facial recognition by landlords and public accommodations in New York City.
We urged City Council to not only pass the two bills but also go further by placing a full ban on the use of facial recognition and other biometric surveillance by police and government. We condemned the systemic abuse of this broken, biased technology, whether landlords’ intimidation of Black and immigrant tenants or Madison Square Garden’s retaliation against those suing the company. |

If passed, these bills would be some of the most comprehensive facial recognition restrictions in the country, protecting New Yorkers on grocery runs, at concerts, and in our own homes. It’s taken years of work to make these advances against facial recognition at City Hall, and we never could have done it without help from S.T.O.P.’s supporters. But we must keep fighting to get these bills passed into law and demand the City Council ban facial recognition’s use by law enforcement.
Join the fight today by using our Ban The Scan contact tool to tell your New York City Council representatives that they must pass laws that will protect all New Yorkers from the threat of facial recognition.
