Friend,
This week marks a turning point for New York City with the election of Zohran Mamdani. Over the past four years, New Yorkers have fought an uphill battle against surveillance solutionism championed by Eric Adams—from expansion of the Domain Awareness System to police robocops and seemingly every other big tech boondoggle under the sun. Thanks to tireless advocacy by community members, civil rights organizations, and supporters like you, we now have an opportunity to chart a better course.
During his tenure in the New York State Assembly, Mamdani has been a dynamic partner in Albany advocating against surveillance and supporting commonsense safeguards across New York City and State. As one of the lead sponsors of the STOP FAKES Act, he has fought for the end of police use of fake social media accounts, penning an op-ed with S.T.O.P. and State Senator Cordell Cleare in 2023. He has also joined us in advocating for accountability in the use of AI in hiring, policing, and public benefits.
It's an open question whether the Mayor-elect will continue pushing policies to dismantle mass surveillance. But no matter what, S.T.O.P.’s commitment is clear: we will hold him and our elected officials at every level accountable in making New York a model for privacy and a true sanctuary for immigrants, abortion seekers, Black and Brown New Yorkers, LGBTQ+ communities, and all groups targeted by over-policing and Trump’s far-right agenda.
S.T.O.P. is ready for this next era. With your support, we’ll keep pushing for a city where safety and civil rights go hand in hand, and where surveillance is replaced by solutions rooted in transparency, equity, and trust.
