Our Latest City Hall Win!After years of fighting NYPD surveillance secrecy, we have a major milestone in our campaign for transparency and the rule of law.
Friend,
After years of fighting NYPD surveillance secrecy, we have a major milestone in our campaign for transparency and the rule of law. The New York City Council just passed two laws strengthening NYPD surveillance transparency.
These amendments to 2020’s Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology (POST) Act require the NYPD to disclose the technologies they use and track how data is shared. Introductions 480 and 168 close loopholes the NYPD exploited to hide how it surveils New Yorkers and how it assists federal agencies, including ICE.
This win couldn’t come at a more crucial time, as the Trump administration continues to weaponize local police data to fuel its ideologically-driven deportations. This transparency is not enough, but it’s an indispensable step towards our ultimate goal: banning NYPD mass surveillance.
At S.T.O.P., we're proud to have fought for these critical amendments and to strengthen every New Yorker’s rights. We promise that we’ll continue to fight for stronger protections and to send a clear message: Hands off our data!
