We’re Suing The NYPD – Again

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Friend,

It’s now been over a year since New Yorkers took to the streets in historic numbers to say Black Lives Matter, amplifying longstanding calls against NYPD violence. The police met those protests with escalation, brutality, and unprecedented levels of surveillance. But while the NYPD’s physical attacks made headlines around the world, its anti-protest surveillance wen unseen.

That’s why Amnesty International, one of the world’s leading human rights organizations, demanded NYPD surveillance records, to see what technologies were used to target dissent. Now, nearly a year later, we’re taking the NYPD to court, forcing the Department to show Amnesty International its records.

This lawsuit comes just a week after we sued the Department for refusing to respond to our own request, demanding documents that detail the NYPD’s facial recognition bias. As we see growing evidence from around the country that facial recognition is biased against BIPOC communities, we need to see just how bad the NYPD’s software is.

When the NYPD makes us sue them for documents that every New Yorker is entitled to see, it shows just how much contempt they have for civilian oversight and civil rights. When we win, we’ll harness the records we get to amplify campaigns to outlaw this technology once and for all, bringing us closer to the day that New Yorkers can walk the streets and speak out against injustice without being tracked.

With thanks,
