Friend,
I’m excited to introduce myself, Nina Loshkajian, as the new Legal Director for the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.)!
This is a pivotal moment in the fight against mass surveillance. Emerging AI technologies are expanding surveillance capabilities, and governments are using these tools to target vulnerable communities. At S.T.O.P, we are especially concerned about the proliferating use of Flock and other automated license plate readers, including by the NYPD, and how this tech endangers our civil liberties. Now more than ever, we must demand accountability and push for change.
As Legal Director, I will lead our incredible Litigation Team in challenging abuses of harmful technologies and threats to our privacy rights in court. Since our founding, S.T.O.P. has taken on important and groundbreaking legal battles against surveillance, from our lawsuit challenging NYPD’s Domain Awareness System to our case seeking transparency from the department on its use of facial recognition technology. I am humbled by the opportunity to move this work forward.
This role also marks my return to S.T.O.P., where I previously served as a Staff Attorney and Legal Fellow! Most recently, I was the Technology & Racial Justice Collaborative Fellow at the Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law at NYU Law, where I gained experience in legislative and policy advocacy, litigation, research, and coalition-building, including the Ban The Scan coalition alongside S.T.O.P. I’m thrilled to bring that experience back to S.T.O.P. and continue working to protect New York communities from the harms of discriminatory surveillance technology.
I can’t wait to get started!
