S.T.O.P. Condemns Hochul Veto of Gov. Transparency Law
(New York, NY, 10/10/2025) – Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy and civil rights group, condemns Governor Hochul’s veto of the FOIL Timeline Act, a crucial bill for greater government transparency in New York State. Passed by the New York State Legislature earlier this summer, the FOIL Timeline Act establishes deadlines for Freedom of Information Law responses by government agencies, which often evade accountability through endless FOIL processing delays.

“Precisely when New Yorkers need government transparency more than ever, Governor Hochul has chosen to keep New Yorkers in the dark,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Legal Director David Siffert. “With spiraling threats to Americans’ civil rights, journalists, activists, and all New Yorkers need timely access to public records. We deserve to know what our government is doing and how it’s spending our money, without all the bureaucratic excuses.”
