Introducing our new Executive Director!

Introducing our new Executive Director!
Friends of S.T.O.P.,

Over the past seven years, S.T.O.P. has grown into one of the nation’s leading voices against mass surveillance. In collaboration with an incredible team, visionary founder Albert Fox Cahn has built not only a powerful nonprofit, but a vibrant community of activists, legal experts, technologists, researchers, and New Yorkers from all walks of life mobilized against the ever-expanding surveillance state.

I am honored to step into the role of Executive Director and build on this extraordinary foundation. I join S.T.O.P. following my Justice Catalyst Fellowship with the National Police Accountability Project, where I developed national resources to support litigation against law enforcement misconduct. I earned my J.D., cum laude, from NYU Law, where I worked in the Civil Rights in the Criminal Legal System Clinic and the Global Justice Clinic, and served as an editor for the Review of Law and Social Change. Before law school, I spent several years in nonprofit development and community engagement––and, like several of my amazing new colleagues at S.T.O.P., I got my start through service in AmeriCorps.

I’m deeply grateful for the warm welcome from the entire S.T.O.P. community. As Executive Director, my goal is to expand S.T.O.P.'s reach and impact: deepening our advocacy and litigation, expanding partnerships with community and movement allies, and securing the resources necessary to sustain our ambitious agenda. One early initiative I’m especially excited about is our Litigation Advisory Council, which will connect S.T.O.P.  with seasoned litigators from leading firms to help advance our growing docket.

These are big shoes (and perhaps tinfoil hats!) to fill, but I am committed to bringing my experience as a civil rights attorney and nonprofit leader to help guide S.T.O.P. into its next chapter. The need for bold leadership in the fight for privacy, justice, and accountability is more urgent than ever, and S.T.O.P. is ready to meet this moment.

And it’s not goodbye from Albert! He will continue actively collaborating with us as a Board member and founder-in-residence, ensuring a seamless and strong transition.

Whether you’ve been with S.T.O.P. since the beginning or are just getting to know us, I’m thrilled to lead this next chapter with you. Together, we’ll continue building a future where privacy and civil rights are protected for all New Yorkers.
With gratitude,
Michelle Dahl
Executive Director
