S.T.O.P. Condemns Trump Campaign’s Voter Surveillance

(NEW YORK, NY, 10/22/2020) – Today, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.), a New York-based privacy group, condemns President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign for voter surveillance in Philadelphia. The Trump campaign reportedly videotaped Philadelphia voters as they deposited their ballots in election drop boxes, a practice that Pennsylvania’s Attorney General warned could constitute illegal voter intimidation.

“This sort of surveillance has no place in our democracy,” said Surveillance Technology Oversight Project Executive Director Albert Fox Cahn. “It is indefensible and potentially illegal to record voters as they exercise their franchise. This sort of surveillance could suppress the vote, deterring people from going to the polls. We call on the Trump campaign and all candidates to denounce this tactic and to block any further election surveillance.”

The Surveillance Technology Oversight Project is a non-profit advocacy organization and legal services provider hosted by the Urban Justice Center. S.T.O.P. litigates and advocates for privacy, fighting excessive local and state-level surveillance. Our work highlights the discriminatory impact of surveillance on Muslim Americans, immigrants, and communities of color.
